 A large ($10B+) lodging company that operates, franchises, and licenses hotels and timeshare properties worldwide

Project Goals

The company desired to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its information technology organization. Although the company realized that many organizational improvements would required years to implement, it was important that significant business results be achieved within six months. Specifically the company wanted to:

• Reduce the costs of information technology as a percent of overall costs
• Improve service levels to the business
• Improve communication between information technology and the business

Deliverables

This project produced a strategy and implementation plan covering the information technology organizational structure, processes and supporting technology, and costs

• Over 50 specific recommendations to improve efficiency and effectiveness were included in the strategy
• The implementation plan spanned a period of 3-5 years

Results

• Information technology staff was reduced 15% by reducing the number of layers in the organization and increasing control spans
• Accountabilities and responsibilities were formally assigned across and within the information technology organization
• A $25 million application development project assessed as having an almost zero chance of success was canceled, saving the company the remaining budget of $20 million
• Management committed to following through on the long-term implementation plan
