 A $6 Billion an energy holding company that provides natural gas, electricity, and other products and services in the United States

Project Goals

Following several years of mergers and restructuring the company desired to assess its application portfolio and its overall information technology costs

• Estimate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for major business applications including: customer information systems, work management systems, call center technologies, financial systems, and budget/planning applications
• Determine actual information technology costs versus appropriate/benchmark costs

Deliverables

This six week effort produced:

• An analysis of the company’s information technology costs versus other energy companies and industries
• Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for all key applications
• Business functionality ratings for applications based on business user survey and expert opinion
• An application portfolio database documenting both functionality and supporting technical platforms
• An detailed inventory and associated high-level implementation plans of cost-reducing initiatives projected to reduce information technology expenditures by over $15 million per year

Results

• Company used the results of this project to prioritize planned information technology expenditures on a go-forward basis
